Residents of Ogome, a Somanya suburb in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of Ghana's Eastern Region, have been horrified by two robberies that have occurred there in less than two weeks.
In the most recent incident, a group of four robbers, one of whom was a woman, targeted a gas station, the GASO oil firm in Ogome, and a Mobile Money seller nearby. They made off with an undisclosed sum of money and $28,000 from the MoMo vendor, who was stationed approximately 200 meters away.
The robbery attack, which shocked locals and customers at Somanya, is alleged to have happened at 7:00 pm on Monday, October 23.
They allege that there have been numerous robberies on the highways leading into the town from Dodowa and Adukrom, but they had no idea that they would soon encounter a heist in the Rambo manner close to the township.
According to an eyewitness, the entire episode only lasted eight minutes. In an effort to flee with their loot, the thieves shot repeatedly with their pump action gun to scare off nearby homeowners or anyone attempting to approach them.
They shot the pump attendant and three other people throughout the incident. The other casualties were brought to the Somanya Polyclinic where they were treated and released while one is in severe condition at the District Hospital in Komeshie.
There are no CCTV cameras at the gas station to give police any details about the incident.
The police in the township of Yilo Krobo lack the necessary vehicles (pickups or motorbikes) to improve their patrol on the major route.
