For those impacted by the water spills from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, the government has given a free medical care package.

The Ghana Health Service reports that things are currently under control and no health emergency is necessary.

Flooding brought on by water spilling from the Kpong and Akosombo dams has forced more than 26,000 people to flee their homes.

Given the extent of the destruction, worries about the affected people's health are widespread, and calls for the declaration of an emergency are growing louder.

78 villages have been impacted, 5 medical institutions have been rendered inoperable, and 171 healthcare professionals have been relocated.

Even though there haven't been any instances reported yet, the Ghana Health Service is constantly monitoring the situation due to a high alert for cholera and other infections associated with diarrhea.

According to Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, the director general of the Ghana Health Service, displaced people living in such locations would receive free medical care.

The impacted districts number nine. There are four districts in the Volta Region: South, North, Central Tongu, and Ada East and Shai Osudoku in Greater Accra. There are three districts in the Eastern Region as well: Asuogyaman, Afram Plains North and South.

There are currently several drugs accessible. To offer free medical care, organizations like the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have all traveled there. Until we can address the issue, I have also ordered that everyone who seeks medical attention without a National Health Insurance (NHIS) card be treated for free,'' he added.

The Director General announced that regional mobilization is underway and that national reinforcement will be sent if necessary, emphasizing that a health emergency is not warranted in this case.

On the subject of health, we are not at a point where that is necessary. The response seems acceptable to me. There are sufficient resources at hand. We keep an eye on the situation every day. Every day, we participate in meetings at the emergency operations center. We will address any problems if they arise. Additionally, the WHO has promised to assist us with logistics,'' he added.
