Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the ranking member for health and a member of parliament for Juaboso, called the government's sod-cutting event to turn Sunyani's Bono Regional Hospital into a teaching hospital a farce.
On Saturday, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, the minister of health, cut the sod for the project.
On Wednesday, November 15, the government released its 2024 budget statement and financial estimates. Akandoh, speaking on behalf of the Minority in Parliament, stated that there was no funding included for the development or enlargement of the Sunyani hospital.
The MP stated, "The minister knows there is no allocation in the 2024 budget. There is no known government policy, financial allocation, and political will to undertake such an expansion of the facility into a teaching facility."
He went on to say that the sod cutting is merely another blatant ploy by the administration to mislead the people of the nation and the Bono area.
"The supposed sod cutting amid an IMF program and the proximity to an election year is suspicious—especially when the project was not captured in the budget," Akandoh argued in support of his position.
The Ranking Member reminded the people of Ghana of the government's repeated broken promises to finance similar initiatives, including the destruction of the operational La General Hospital and the Accident and Emergency Center at the Dormaa Hospital.
