The Minority in Parliament has sharply criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's remarks regarding the 24-hour economy strategy, casting doubt on the Vice President's economic background and refuting his assertions regarding the policy's execution.
On Monday, November 20, Dr. Bawumia disregarded previous President John Dramani Mahama's interpretation of the 24-hour economy strategy, claiming that hospitals, fuel businesses, and certain chop bars—food restaurants—were already implementing it in Ghana.
In retaliation, the Minority criticized Dr. Bawumia's economic track record on Tuesday, November 21, during discussions on the 2024 Budget, pointing out that Ghana's economy was "ailing" despite his vast background in economics.
A member of Parliament's Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, questioned Dr. Bawumia's comprehension of the 24-hour economy concept in light of the dire circumstances surrounding the economy he oversaw.
"Mr. Speaker, with all due respect, Dr. Bawumia," he said cynically. Having studied economics for nearly thirty years, this is the economy he has left behind.
Mr. Adongo went on to refute Dr. Bawumia's claim that the strategy for the 24-hour economy was already in place.
His argument was that a truly 24-hour economy required more than just extending some businesses' operating hours; rather, it was a complicated idea that called for wider structural and cultural reforms.
